Christmas in Switzerland - any tips?

Hi. We are going to Interlaken for Christmas this year. Any tips on what I should pack/do/take? I’ve been to warmer places for Christmas previously (Dubai, Singapore…) but my first time in this climate. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you xx

Hi @hamirakhan! Great choice for a Christmas holiday (although I live in Switzerland so I am perhaps a little biased!) - Interlaken is a great hub for getting to multiple places.

Clothing-wise you’ll of course need a good warm coat, preferably a down puffer and some winter boots with good grip that you don’t mind traipsing through snow. Beyond that, it depends what activities you’d like to do as to what you’ll need.

If you’re happy to explore a bit, Thun (at the other end of Thunersee lake) is lovely for a day out.

If you plan to ski, Grindelwald is nearby to Interlaken and a place we keep going back to. It has a large, well-connected ski area and is very scenic. Wengen and Mürren are also good but smaller. All accessible on the train from Interlaken.

If you’re not a skiier you could go sledging, do some winter hiking or go snowshoeing (rent some in Interlaken) on the trails which will give an amazing view of the lake and mountains. I use SwissMobility and Komoot to look at routes. If you do this make sure your boots are pretty waterproof or you take some kind of gaiter to cover them.

You can also go up to Jungfraujoch on the gondola; it features in a lot of movies and is an incredible viewpoint. There is also an ice cave you can visit.

And of course make time for lots of fondue, gluhwein and sauna! Viel Spaß!
