Hi, I’m heading to Southwold in a couple of weeks for a short family break and am on the hunt for recommendations please! We’ll have our 3yo son with us so any daytime things to do that are parent and or child pleasing, plus any great places to eat/must visit shops and places to go - thank you!
I really like Aldeburgh and the surrounding area:
Sutton Hoo nearby is really interesting too and I imagine great for kids to run around!
In Southwold I definitely recommend getting fish and chips at “The little fish and chips shop” and The Swan hotel is lovely for some lunch
Hello,
Southwold lifetimer here. Have been going on holiday there since I was 5 and now have two children of my own.
The most child friendly place to eat is the restaurant on the pier. It’s fun in the evening and you get a lovely view as the sun goes down. The play park is brilliant and taking scooters also lots of fun. The highlight of the week for my two is always taking the ferry path from Southwold to the harbour. We go crabbing at walberswick and take the rowing boat ferry to get there. There are lots of lovely walks and the Maize Maze and cafe has loads of entertainment. Croissants for brekkie from two magpies essential. A trip to the Serena Hall gallery for beautiful and inspiring colourful coastal art. Aldeburgh also lovely but sooooo much to do in Southwold so if you are only there for 3 days then you won’t need to venture out in your car. My children always take their scooters as scooting to get croissants and then a long the prom first thing in the morning is always fun.
Hope that helps!
Eateries - The Swan (I would say for the grown ups), Coasters, The Boardwalk (pier) and there is a new resto at the Harbour that sells sharing platters and champagne between 4-7pm. It has a balcony which is a perfect place to sit on a sunny evening. We took children. There is also an amazing fresh fish counter at the harbour but you need to get there early to avoid disappointment.
Thanks so much for these, really helpful and we’re actually staying at the swan so glad to hear it’s nice. So excited now! Great tips re things for entertainment of children too as obv that tends to affect the success (or not!) of trips these days!!
Love love love Southwold - we used to camp in Walberswick and go cycling. Loads of families of children your age, so suggest follow the other families as they know easy walkable bits of beach, play areas, local activities - keep it simple but you will enjoy it as adults too as it is just fab place.
