I’ve booked a few days in Reykjavic next Feb and im looking forward to some exploring, but equally terrified of the minus temps I’ll be facing (as a permanently cold person!!) Does anyone have recommendations for a reslly warm but lightweight outdoorsy jacket? Online is a minefield and i dont mind spending a little more but I’ll be in a bit of a pickle if i get there and it doesn’t withstand the cold!!
Highly recommend Arcteryx
66 North is stylish, comfortable, practical, plus theyre Icelandic. They’ve recently done a collab with Gianni which is super cute!
This Varley coat looks super warm, it has thermal fleece lined pockets! I like it in the truffle colour way
Thanks guys, some great suggestions - will do some digging!
I think this Lululemon jacket is perfect in terms of length and quality and it comes in range of colours: https://www.lululemon.co.uk/en-gb/p/wunder-puff-long-jacket/prod9960898.html?dwvar_prod9960898_color=26839
Not sure where you’ve tried but as someone who really feels the cold, whilst I would say wool coats generally look good and vaguely smart, the puffer style coats always seem to be warmer. Don’t go cheap though, you’ll want something water resistant ideally. Wash via a dry cleaner otherwise you risk removing the waterproofed protection layer.
If you want brand recommendations, I’d say look at Sweaty Betty (the Nimbus is very warm) or Lululemon. Both have long waterproofed puffer coats which will keep you warm and dry. Be prepared to spend more than you would from say a puffer from a cheaper brand but you get what you pay for in my experience.
It’s dry cold though and often quite sunny, so not as awful as the UK.
I recommend Land’s End down-filled coats. I have had one for years, to wear to outdoor sporting events. Took it to Iceland one February and it was ideal. Plenty of choice of coat length and colour:
How amazing! I’ve always wanted to go there. I think you definitely want down for warmth. I really feel the cold and always layer a uniqlo lightweight one when i’m going somewhere super chilly
I went to Iceland in early March this year and it was so COLD! At least -10 and when there was windchill (which was most of the time to be honest, and extreme up on the glaciers) it “felt like -40”. Anyway I bought the Sweaty Betty Nimbus “Down” Parka and was so thrilled with it. It kept me toasty with a woollen jumper and base layers (Uniqlo etc) underneath. It was nice and long so covered my legs almost to my ankles, so when I was in the city I didn’t need to also wear the ugly bulky padded trouser things (I wore these on the glaciers and in the country side on our tour. Hired these and boots, would recommend if you don’t have any and don’t want to spend lots of money on lets be honest, not the most thrilling of items! They were good quality and clean from where we hired them).
Don’t skimp on toasty gloves and a hat, but you can buy gorgeous wool and fur (if you’re happy with that) ones at shops in Reykjavik as well.
Anyway the Sweaty Betty Parka was great because it zipped at both ends so gave good movement. Enjoy!!
Amazing feedback, thanks so much Rebecca
I’ve just bought a really warm coat from Finisterre, it’s called the Vellus. A plain black parka waterproof and very snug x
