Career Advice!

Hello lovely ladies !!

I have just finished my Alevel and off to do a gap year in which hopefully I will be doing a ski season and then might go travelling .

I am so stuck on how to enter an industry without any experience, I have a space at university at RAU in the Cotswolds to study business management but I am tempted to go straight into work but not 100% yet.
I would love to know whether you have any advice on how to get into the fashion / beauty / marketing / pr/ publishing field ? And how to land an amazing internship?
As I would love to work at sheer luxe in future but would love to know what I can do to get there and is university worth it or is a waste of time & money ? :star2:

The LG’s spoke about this topic on our podcast a few months ago here with Bronte from ‘gals who’! I also think following accounts like ‘galswhograduate’ is so good for connecting with people in the same situation and similarly there’s a lot of instagram/tiktok accounts that post job/internship openings in different industries! LinkedIn is also a great place to find and connect with people at the companies you love and put yourself out there!

Hey - congrats on finishing school!!

I think it can be quite an overwhelming time so firstly I’d recommend that you use the time when you’re on your gap year just to consider different industries and what you really want from a job and where you want to be in the future.

If you’re set on fashion I would take some time to scroll on LinkedIn to have a look at people’s career paths and the brands they worked/moved from. Definitely try to email/message as many people as possible with specific questions, it’s easy to ask for career advice but you will probably receive quite a vague reply so get some specific questions ready.

Then I would try and get as much experience as possible - ask different brands/offices/PRs if they could have you in their office for a few days - try to get a variety of experiences to find out which area of fashion suits you best. Good luck!! x

Hi  excellent work on getting through those A levels. Great that you’re looking to work your way through some of your gap year, your experiences will define your future choices. Tip #1 take notice of what you like and hate about working. #2 list the skills you gain - and how you use them. #3 notice what drives you. Fashion is a very intense, passionate business, small details matter - is that you? #4 keep a diary/journal of these things - especially your successes - so that you build a picture of who you are ‘brand you’ which will support your career self-esteem for years to come. Best wishes to you!
