From a Sussex resident:
for easy access to London I’d suggest within the radius of Haywards Heath, a decent rail service (45mins to london) and plenty of pretty surrounding towns/villages (Newick, Lindfield, Bolney).

Lewes in East Sussex is a popular town for good reason, would highly recommend a visit, trains to London Victoria take just over an hour, and not far from Uckfield.

Tunbridge Wells is in Kent, right next to the Kent/Sussex border so might be the ideal compromise for you, again trains to london take just under or just over an hour.

Hi, I live in a small village called Preston which is between Canterbury and Margate. 15 minute drive into Canterbury for the 50 minute train into St Pancras. There are a lot of villages which have a real rural feel such a Ickham, Wingham, Wickhambreux which are all very lovely, but all also convenient for Whitstable, Margate, Deal, Canterbury and Sandwich - all under 30 minutes away.

I moved from London 7 years ago to Worthing in West Sussex. At the time Brighton & Hove weren’t affordable and Worthing was more affordable. Since then it has grown in popularity with more people moving down from London and Brighton. Its 1hr 25min from London on the train.
Worthing is a lovely town with lots of independent restaurants, cafes & shops. Has an award winning pier with the famous Perch on the Pier restaurant. It has everything you need including supermarkets in town ie. Waitrose, Morrisons.
It has a creative vibe with many artists and musicians living in the area.

Hi Kate, Similar to Nicole - I am just down the road from Canterbury in a new build estate in Aylesham! I absolutely love the village, i’ve made 3 of my best friends here and everyone is so friendly!

I’ve also lived in Beltinge, which is a very quiet sleepy village but so close to the beach and has the beautiful Reculver and Whitstable so close too! Perfect in the summers and quick driving distance to Canterbury and Thanet.

I also work in Faversham which is SO up and coming! Plus it’s right on the way to the M2 so perfect if you need to commute anywhere!

I also live in mid Sussex. Haywards Heath is ideal a good rail links to London/Brighton, easy access to M25, lots of lovely surrounding villages (Lindfield, Cuckfield, Hurstpierpoint - if you can afford them). Burgess Hill is more budget/frirndly. Closer to East Grinstead you have Lingfield, Forest Row, Ashurstwood. All lovely villages. Haywards Heath has better rail links than East Grinstead. Horsham is also a lovely town but perhaps not as convenient in terms of transport.
